KIRKLAND, Wash., March 29 — The North American Kazakh Association hosted a vibrant Nauryz celebration on Saturday, bringing together members of the local community to mark the traditional Central Asian New Year with music, food, and cultural performances.

Held in Kirkland, the event reflected the spirit of renewal and unity that defines Nauryz, a holiday widely celebrated across Kazakhstan and neighboring regions. Among those in attendance was King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci, whose presence underscored the event’s importance within the broader local community.

Attendees gathered to enjoy an afternoon rich in cultural exchange, highlighted by live music, traditional cuisine, and intergenerational participation.

A centerpiece of the celebration was a series of musical performances featuring the dombyra, Kazakhstan’s iconic two-stringed instrument. Skilled Kazakh musicians delivered lively and expressive pieces, showcasing the instrument’s distinctive sound and its central role in Kazakh cultural heritage.

Among the performers was Elcan Daneshver, an Azerbaijani high school student who recently began learning the dombyra. His participation illustrated the growing cross-cultural appreciation within the community, as well as the instrument’s resonance beyond its country of origin.

The program also featured Matthew Ozgercin, who performed traditional Turkish compositions on the oud, a stringed instrument widely used in Middle Eastern music. His performance added a broader regional dimension to the event, highlighting shared musical traditions across cultures.

Renowned Kazakh singer Aigul Imanbayeva headlined the celebration, captivating the audience with her vocal performance. Her appearance was met with enthusiasm and underscored the event’s significance for the local Kazakh diaspora.

In addition to musical acts, the event featured a series of cultural performances. Gulmet Kulmedov and his son entertained guests with a humorous “plov fighting” dance, playfully depicting a competition over who gets to eat more of the beloved dish. Madina Abdurashidova performed the Uzbek dance “Chamadagul,” adding another layer of regional cultural expression to the program.

Guests were treated to a variety of traditional dishes, including baursak—fried dough pastries commonly served during festive occasions—and plov, a hearty rice dish prepared with meat and vegetables. Tea was served throughout the event, fostering a warm and communal atmosphere.

Organizers emphasized the importance of Nauryz as a time for cultural preservation and community connection. By bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds, the celebration not only honored Kazakh traditions but also strengthened ties across the broader Central Asian and international community in the Pacific Northwest.

The event concluded with expressions of gratitude from organizers and participants alike, marking a successful and memorable celebration of heritage, music, and unity.
