On May 26, 2024, Tatars of Washington State organized a lively and colorful Sabantuy celebration at Blyth Park in Bothell, WA, bringing together around 100 people from across the region, including visitors who traveled all the way from Portland, Oregon. This annual Tatar festival, held to celebrate the arrival of summer, was filled with music, traditional food, and joyful activities that highlighted Tatar culture and fostered a sense of community among participants.

Tatars of Washington State, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving Tatar culture and language, has been working tirelessly to create opportunities for Tatars to connect, learn, and share their traditions. The Sabantuy celebration was a perfect example of their mission in action, bringing together individuals of all ages to enjoy and celebrate their shared heritage.

The event was brought to life by an array of performances and activities. Bulat Idrisov, a Bashkir DJ, energized the crowd with a mix of traditional and modern beats, setting the tone for a lively day of dancing and celebration. Traditional Tatar music was also featured, with Kerem Onat playing the bağlama and Ayrat performing the beloved song Tugan Tel on the accordion, evoking a deep sense of cultural pride and nostalgia.

A highlight of the event was the delicious food prepared and served by community members. Batyr Galeev took charge of cooking and serving a mouthwatering batch of plov (pilaf), which became an instant favorite among attendees. The celebration also featured a variety of homemade dishes brought by the community, including the ever-popular uchpochmak, a traditional Tatar pastry filled with meat, potatoes, and onions.

Adding to the fun, attendees took part in a variety of games and activities. The adults engaged in a lively potato sack race, while the kids enjoyed a competitive egg race, both of which brought lots of laughter and friendly competition. A unique twist to the celebration was the Tatar hip hop dance performed by some of the community members, showcasing the blend of tradition and modernity that defines Tatar culture.

The event’s success was a testament to the strength and spirit of the Tatar community in Washington State, and it marked another important step for the organization in building connections and promoting Tatar culture. As Tatars of Washington State continues its mission, the organization looks forward to more events that celebrate Tatar identity, language, and traditions, ensuring that future generations can enjoy and embrace their rich cultural heritage.
