Mountlake Terrace, WA – May 17, 2024 — A new chapter for the Azerbaijani community in Washington state was marked on May 17, 2024, with the official registration of the Association of Washington State Azerbaijanis (AWSA) as a nonprofit organization. The association, which aims to promote and celebrate Azerbaijani culture, heritage, and community, was founded by a dedicated group of individuals: Fagan Yusifli, Gunay Askerova, and Kerem Onat.

The AWSA’s mission is to create a platform for the Azerbaijani community in Washington state, fostering cultural exchange, supporting community initiatives, and providing resources for Azerbaijanis in the region. The organization will host events, cultural programs, and educational activities to showcase the richness of Azerbaijani traditions, arts, and language.
“We are excited to formally establish this association,” said Fagan Yusifli, one of the founding members. “Our goal is to help preserve and share our cultural heritage with the broader community while also supporting Azerbaijanis who have made Washington their home.”
The association’s founders bring a wealth of experience and passion to the initiative. Fagan Yusifli, a well-respected figure within the Azerbaijani community, has long been an advocate for cultural exchange. Gunay Askerova, known for her leadership in organizing community events, has been instrumental in uniting Azerbaijani families in Washington. Kerem Onat, also an advocate for diversity and inclusion, has worked tirelessly to bridge communities and promote cultural understanding, especially among the Turkic-speaking populations.
With its registration as a nonprofit, the AWSA is now positioned to create a lasting impact on the Azerbaijani community in Washington state. The association plans to organize cultural festivals, language classes, educational seminars, and networking events to engage both Azerbaijani-Americans and the broader community. They also hope to collaborate with other cultural organizations to promote mutual understanding and respect.
As the organization continues to grow, its founders are enthusiastic about the future. “This is just the beginning,” said Yusifli.
The Association of Washington State Azerbaijanis welcomes new members and supporters who are passionate about preserving and promoting Azerbaijani culture. For more information or to get involved, visit the association’s website or contact their team directly.
