City of Mountlake Terrace Proclaims April 23rd as Children’s Day

Mountlake Terrace, WA – April 11, 2024 – In a heartfelt ceremony on April 11, 2024, the City of Mountlake Terrace officially declared April 23rd as Children’s Day, in honor of Turkey’s national holiday dedicated to the well-being and future of children. The proclamation was signed by Mayor Matsumoto Wright and celebrated by local community members.

The proclamation coincided with a small but meaningful celebration, where the Mountlake Terrace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commissioner, Kerem Onat, delivered a moving speech about the significance of the day.

“As a Turkish resident of Mountlake Terrace, I am honored to be here today. For me, this initiative symbolizes not only cultural recognition but also a profound commitment to our children’s well-being and future,” Onat said. “In Türkiye, Children’s Day in April is a day of immense significance, dedicated entirely to our children, the architects of tomorrow. It embodies the spirit of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who declared that children are the future of any nation.”

Onat also shared a cherished tradition from Turkey, where on April 23rd, government officials symbolically give up their seats to children, allowing them to experience leadership and decision-making. This special occasion also brings children from around the world to Türkiye to share their traditional dances and songs, promoting cultural exchange.

“This proclamation reflects our shared values of honoring the potential within every child,” Onat continued. “Today, in Mountlake Terrace, we take a significant step towards fostering a community where every child is cherished, empowered, and supported. Children are not just the promise of tomorrow, but the reality of today.”

Following the event, the Turkish Consul General from Los Angeles sent a letter of appreciation to the City of Mountlake Terrace, thanking the community for recognizing and honoring Turkey’s Children’s Day. The Consul General expressed gratitude for the city’s commitment to cultural exchange and for fostering a sense of connection between Turkish traditions and the broader Mountlake Terrace community.

The celebration of Children’s Day in Mountlake Terrace highlights the city’s commitment to providing a nurturing environment for children to thrive. By adopting this special day, the city reaffirms its dedication to ensuring that every child feels valued and celebrated.

In closing, Onat quoted Atatürk’s words: “Dear Young Ladies and Gentlemen. All of you are the future’s flowers, stars, the brightness of a fortunate destiny. You are the ones who will truly illuminate the country. Consider how important and valuable you are yourselves, and work accordingly.”

With this proclamation, Mountlake Terrace continues to honor its diverse cultural roots while reaffirming the importance of nurturing future generations. For more details, you can read the full MLT News article here.
